Arrest of 15 for Allegedly Trafficking Girls from Venezuela to New York Shares Similarities to Tren de Aragua Bust in Tennessee

The New York District Attorney this week announced the arrest of 15 individuals accused of participating in a sex trafficking conspiracy that saw women transported to the United States under false pretenses, then forced to pay a “debt” through coerced prostitution.

The district attorney’s office shared news of the arrests on Tuesday, when the department alleged the suspects, “coerced women to engage in prostitution by paying for their travel from Venezuela to the U.S., and then forcing them to pay off that ‘debt.’”

According to the press release, the victims were recruited in 2023, when the suspects allegedly paid for more than a dozen men to travel from Venezuela to the United States.

“Once the women arrived in the New York City area, they were expected to engage in prostitution and hand over the proceeds to pay down the loans. The loans continued to grow with interest, and with operational costs including payments for online advertisements, car services, phone bills, and brothel fees,” according to the district attorney.

Of the 15 suspects, 10 are charged with sex trafficking, while two received the additional charge of sex trafficking a child. All 15 are charged with conspiracy and promoting prostitution.

New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner Tisch said the accused, “allegedly dehumanized women by luring them into our city, sexually exploiting them for profit, and controlling them with threats of violence.”

The allegations bear similarities to the case brought earlier this year against targeting an alleged member of Tren de Aragua (TdA), the Venezuelan prison gang that began operating in Tennessee under the Biden administration.

Announced by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations (TBI) in November 2024, alleged TdA member Adelvis Rodriguez-Carmona and three other men were accused of operating human sex trafficking ring and charged with prostitution as well as other crimes.

Rodriguez-Carmona was reportedly suspected of committing violent offenses in New York prior to relocating to Tennessee.

A second case against alleged TdA members arose in Tennessee in February, when the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) held a press conference accusing eight Venezuelan nationals of conspiring, “to transport women from South America into the United States and compelled those women to engage in prostitution.”

Similar to the allegations in New York, the DOJ claimed the defendants lured South American women to Middle Tennessee with “promises of a better life,” and once they were in the country, “bullied, intimidated, and threatened,” the victims in order to compel them to “have sex with total strangers for illegal profits.”

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced in June that the Trump administration had arrested more than 2,700 TdA members, and in October the Memphis Safe Task Force reported the arrest of a TdA member in Shelby County.
