National Guard troops will be helping Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Nashville next month, according to Nashville Scene.
The outlet obtained a document last week showing that 1-181st Field Artillery Regiment, which is stationed in Chattanooga, will deploy to the Department of Homeland (DHS) facility in Nashville starting September 1st.
The document, which is dated July 30th, said the deployment will last until December 15th or till the end of the year.
At the DHS facility, these National Guard troops will be helping with “administrative and logistical tasks.” The document said these troops are “prohibited from direct contact with individuals in ICE custody or involvement in any aspect of the custody chain.”
The document noted the National Guard members who are participating in this operation will serve under Title 32. In July, the Department of Defense changed the status of certain National Guard members from Title 10 to Title 32, which gave these individuals the authority to assist ICE in its operations.
Fox News reported last week that Tennessee was going to be part of 19 states where National Guard troops were going to be deployed to assist ICE in its operations.
Besides Tennessee, the other states were Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wyoming.
The National Guard troops acting in other states will also be performing administrative duties and not arresting individuals. Up to 1,700 troops will be dispersed around these 19 states, Fox News said.
Last week, Tom Homan, the White House’s border czar, told NewsNation that “ICE is overwhelmed.”
“ICE has less than 5,000 deportation officers. We’ve got well over 20 million illegal aliens,” Homan told the outlet. “We’ve got almost 700,000 illegal aliens with criminal history that we’re trying to find.”
This operation is not related to the National Guard being deployed in Washington, D.C., to help the nation’s capital with its crime. Tennessee was one of six states that sent National Guard troops to help the area. The state sent 160 National Guard members to Washington, D.C.
Since the National Guard was deployed into Washington, D.C., earlier this month, the nation’s capital has seen a decrease in crime rates.
FOX45 NEWS reported that carjackings are down 83 percent, robberies have decreased by 46 percent, and car thefts have declined by 21 percent.
Furthermore, the overall crime rate is down 22 percent.
This week, National Guard members have started carrying either an M17 pistol or an M4 rifle in Washington, D.C., Reuters said.
