Mark Pulliam, a retired attorney and Misrule of Law blogger, warns that New York City is heading toward a “cataclysm that it may never recover from” under Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s leadership.
Mamdani, a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist was sworn in as the first Muslim mayor of New York City on Thursday. He took the oath of office on the Quran.
Pulliam argued that Mamdani’s open embrace of Democratic Socialism and collectivism represents a fundamental rejection of American principles, which he warns is especially dangerous for a city with New York’s size, complexity, and historical significance.
“The fact that this is happening in New York City on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is a travesty,” Pulliam said on Monday’s edition of The Michael Patrick Leahy Show.
“New York City was one of the nation’s first capitals. It’s the home of Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, some of the early founders. It was where George Washington was sworn in and gave his inauguration as president. The idea that it’s been reduced to almost a third world status parroting this commie propaganda, It’s shameful,” he added.
Pulliam highlighted Mamdani’s lack of qualifications, governing experience, and costly agenda, which he explained would require billions of dollars the city does not have.
“New York City is a big, complicated city to govern – 8.5 million residents, workforce of 300,000 – and he has never held a private sector job. All of these programs that he’s promising to deliver are going to cost $7 billion more than the current city budget permits. He has no realistic way of raising this revenue,” Pulliam stressed.
“New York is in for a shock,” he added.
Pulliam also argued that Mamdani is attempting to run one of the world’s largest cities while prioritizing ideological signaling over practical competence, especially through appointments he says emphasize “identity politics” and “DEI” rather than expertise.
“One of his first acts as mayor was to put an overweight lesbian with no firefighting experience to head the New York Fire Department, the world’s largest fire department, and a very important public safety function in New York City is going to be headed by somebody with zero relevant experience,” he noted.
“What he’s done is to double down and put the kookiest, wackiest, most fringe-like people in charge of very important functions,” he added.
Pulliam concluded that New York City is heading toward a self-inflicted crisis, suggesting that federal leaders, including President Donald Trump, may ultimately allow the city to face the consequences of its political choices rather than intervening.
“This city is going to experience a cataclysm that it may never recover from. You’re going to see massive flight of capital and jobs to places like Florida, and I think President Trump is going to have to take the position that, New York, you’ve made your bed, now you have to lie in it,” he said.
