On August 6, Tennessee held primary elections for statewide offices and the general election for county offices. In Williamson County, Tennessee, the results were shocking, to put it mildly.
To begin with, some background is in order. I moved to Williamson County in 1997. While Tennessee had been a blue state for over a century, things were changing, and Williamson County was already bright red. The county officials were almost all republicans. Democrats ran as independents because they would never be elected as democrats. The Williamson County Republican Party was very dynamic. It had an office on Main Street in Franklin. It was staffed full time, and the location was a can’t-miss location.
The Democrats, on the other hand, could not even open a headquarters during election season. I heard someone joke one time, “There were only three democrats left in Williamson County, and two had not been heard from in years.”
Almost thirty years later, things have changed. In the election, Williamson County, which is still considered one of the reddest counties in the state, elected one Democrat to the County Commission, one radical leftist Democrat to the School Board, and the Democrats came within easy reach of putting one additional member on the County Commission and another on the School Board.
Today, the Democrat Party has a prominent, permanent office. The Republican Party has an office, but it is buried in a warehouse neighborhood in Franklin.
The last ten years have shown a sharp uptick in support for Democrats in Williamson County.
In 2026, there were approximately 32,000 votes cast for Democrats in the county primary election and in the county general election. By 2026, that number had shot up to 72,000. Republicans during the same time started out at 72,000 and by this year were up to 112,000.
There is a definite trend there. While Republicans continue to have a significant majority, Democrats have been making major inroads. Democrat vote totals have more than doubled since 2016, up 125%, while Republican vote totals are only a 55% increase.
Why is that?
Williamson County has seen tremendous growth in the last decade. We have had a number of blue state refugees. But we’ve also had a lot of people who came here for employment. Those aren’t the conservatives fleeing for a free state. And we had a huge influx during COVID.
Those people who came from the blue states brought their politics with them, and some of them are affluent, and now the democrats have funding.
And then there is Republican complacency.
Republicans hold a supermajority in Williamson County and Tennessee. Many Republicans were not here or don’t remember when Democrats completely controlled this state. They take a supermajority for granted and don’t do the work to maintain it.
If the Williamson County Republican Party or, for that matter, the Tennessee Republican Party is doing anything to grow grassroots activism and increase the number of rank-and-file members, it is a closely guarded secret. According to the Williamson County Republican Party’s website, they do not have a single event scheduled between now and November 30th. There are no get-out-the-vote efforts, candidate campaign events, poll watcher training, or even a party meeting.
I’m not sure if it is possible to make less of an effort.
Williamson County did not flip blue, unlike Montgomery County did. But the handwriting is on the wall.
While final figures are not in, initial tallies show that approximately 40,000 voted out of almost 200,000 registered voters in Williamson County. The future and the government belong to those who show up, and the Republicans don’t seem to be too interested in getting voters to show up.
What will the future look like?
Based on certain trends, this is one projection.
Ten years from now, Williamson County could be a purple county, not the solid red county Republicans have taken for granted for the last almost 40 years.

Oh, it’s going to happen. The most obvious and discussed reason will be the influx of people from out of state that are ostensibly fleeing “higher taxes”, but make no mistake that is the ONLY thing “conservative” about their voting tendencies. When it comes to sexual deviancy and other “evolving” standards of decency they are bringing “California” values with them. They chose to call that their libertarian steak rather than liberal (see Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent). But, what will go under or not reported is that many upper middle class non-transplants are tiring of the constant barrage of Israel-first rhetoric from the Republican standard bearers. Many such people care about taxes, cost of living and oppose the sexual deviancy and loose morals of the Democrat party, but if banged over the head with Israel-first, Stand With Israel, Sharia Law is hiding under your bed, etc. nonsense will either stay at home or look for alternatives.
