House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Monday nominated California Rep. Eric Swalwell to be the top Democrat on the newly minted January 6 panel.
Georgia GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk, who led the House investigation into January 6 in the last CongressCongress, will lead the new select subcommittee, which is investigating the riot, and the previously Democrat-run January 6 select committee.
Jeffries also selected Reps. Jasmine Crockett of Texas and Jared Moskowitz of Florida to serve as the other two Democrats on the panel. House Speaker Mike Johnson gets final approval of all members, but Jeffries is allowed to name three Democrats for the select subcommittee.
“Instead of lowering costs for everyday Americans, House Republicans are once again trying to rewrite history and corrupt our electoral system,” Jeffries said in a statement. “House Democrats will continue to forcefully and aggressively push back, as we did with Donald Trump’s second impeachment and the work done by the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack on the United States Capitol.”
The new eight-member panel will operate under the House Judiciary Committee and will be required to release a final report by the end of 2026.
Johnson has not yet named the other Republican members of the committee.
During the first iteration of the January 6th select committee, members included: Representatives Bennie Thompson (D-MS-02), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA-18), Adam Schiff (D-CA-30), Pete Aguilar (D-CA-33), Stephanie Murphy (D-FL-07), Jamie Raskin (D-MD-08), Elaine Luria (D-VA-02), Liz Cheney (R-WY-01), and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL-16). Then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed Cheney and Kinzinger after rejecting House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s recommendation of Republican selections for the committee.
Of these nine members, five are not in the House anymore.
Schiff went on to be a California senator, while Murphy, Luria, Cheney, and Kinzinger have left Congress.
Before President Joe Biden left office, he pardoned all members of this committee.
