Senator Marsha Blackburn said on Thursday that she was inspired to consider a gubernatorial campaign, which could lead to her departure from the U.S. Senate, by the promises by President Donald Trump to return enormous power from the federal government back to individual states.
The Tennessee Republican explained her thought process during an appearance on “The John Fredericks Show,” telling host John Fredericks, who publishes The Virginia Star, The Georgia Star, and The Pennsylvania Daily Star, that she was devoting serious thought into the implications of possibly leaving the Senate.
“It has been so heartening to me; so many people have reached out, and they have said, ‘Hey, we want you to look at this.’
“I am going to give it serious consideration,” said Blackburn. “We’ve got about 18 months in front of us that we have to pass the legislation that is going to put President Donald Trump’s agenda in place. We know that. He is sending power back to the states; we know education, healthcare, public safety, many of these issues are going to be coming back to the states.”
Blackburn told Fredericks, “it is going to be up to the states, with strong governors and strong legislatures, to grab this power and to put this power in place for the people, and to help conservatives, and to help everyone realize a smaller government, a decentralized government, power in your hands, not the hands of the elite, is the best way to deliver services for the American people.”
With Governor Bill Lee unable to seek a third term in office, Blackburn recently confirmed she was interested in the position, and a survey conducted by the polling company used by President Donald Trump found her with a nearly 60-point lead over State Representative John Rose (R-TN-06), who last year indicated he would run for governor.
Fredericks also asked Blackburn about the Senate’s confirmation of Trump’s cabinet nominations.
“I think you’ll see all of the president’s nominees get confirmed,” she told Fredericks. She added that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., “had a really good hearing yesterday, we were pleased with that hearing, and I thought he presented very well.”
Blackburn expressed similar optimism for former Representative Tulsi Gabbard, who Trump nominated to serve as the Director of National Intelligence (DNI).
“I anticipate that Tulsi will do a superb job. I have supported her, continue to support her, am encouraging her, and look forward to the committee sending her to the floor for a vote so we can confirm her as the next DNI,” said Blackburn.
