Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville) and State Representative Lee Reeves (R-Franklin), who is running in the special primary election for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District, issued a proclamation honoring the life of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.

Kirk died after being shot at his American Comeback Tour event held at Utah Valley University last Wednesday. He was 31 years old.

On the Thursday following Kirk’s death, Sexton and Reeves issued an official proclamation to honor Kirk’s life, praising the Turning Point USA co-founder as a “gifted orator and debater” and “an outstanding individual, a devoted family man, and a pillar of the American conservative movement.”

“[W]e were greatly saddened to learn of the untimely death of Charlie Kirk, an important voice in the conservative movement and a close ally of President Donald Trump, who died after being shot by an assassin’s bullet,” the proclamation reads.

Pointing to Kirk’s successful work with Turning Point USA and his podcast, The Charlie Kirk Show, the proclamation goes on to read, “Charlie Kirk was a major figure and voice within the young conservative movement who argued for a new conservatism that advocated for freedom of speech.”

“[H]is passing leaves a void in our country that will not be easily filled,” the proclamation adds.

Reeves, explaining why he decided to issue the proclamation with Sexton honoring Kirk’s life, called Kirk a “a national hero and lion for Jesus Christ,” adding, “We must honor his memory.”

In addition to honoring Kirk through the proclamation, Reeves also released the text of a resolution he plans to file this week for the upcoming legislative session of the Tennessee General Assembly to designate September 10, 2026 as “Charlie Kirk Day” in the Volunteer State.
