The Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce and xAI, the artificial intelligence (AI) company owned by Elon Musk, announced on Friday the company’s purchase of an $80 million, 1-million-square-foot building in Memphis, Tennessee, to expand facilities for its Colossus supercomputer, which is reportedly set to become the largest in the world.
A press release by the Greater Memphis Chamber announced xAI’s acquisition, which it said is part of Musk’s effort to expand its Colossus supercomputer project in the southwest part of the city.
“xAI’s acquisition of this property ensures we’ll remain at the forefront of AI innovation, right here in Memphis,” stated xAI Senior Manager Brent Mayo. “We’re committed to expanding alongside this community and doing what’s best for the city. As we transform this property and enhance our facility, we’ll bring more employment opportunities and economic growth to the area.”
Ted Townsend, the president and CEO of the Greater Memphis Chamber, said xAI’s expansion shows that Memphis is “the ideal location for companies leading the future of technology.”
The company announced its forthcoming expansion at its Memphis facility last year, saying it would eventually increase from 100,000 Nvidia graphics cards used to process AI to 1 million, though experts questioned how quickly xAI could acquire so many cards.
When the xAI’s project in Memphis was announced, U.S. Representative Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) said the company intended to build “the world’s largest supercomputer” in Memphis. It’s since been reported that Musk’s company will seek zero state or local tax incentives throughout the duration of its project.
An Ashland City man was arrested last week after he allegedly told friends and colleagues that he planned to bomb the xAI facility in Memphis over political disagreements with President Donald Trump and his administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Law enforcement reported the man admitted to authorities that he purchased materials to create explosives after becoming “too wrapped up in politics,” but claimed that he never went through with creating actual explosives.

Destruction of private and public property is increasingly becoming course of action being taken by more and more of the progressive/socialist party’s constituents. It’s reminiscent of so many of previous government take overs in history. Apparently they think it will work here as well.
I hope that they saved a lot of money for security.
