U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Friday revealed details of the investigation which led to the conviction of Camilo Campos-Hurtado, an illegal alien from Mexico who recorded his sexual assaults on Nashville children who he drugged, after gaining access to youth through a soccer program. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison last month.
In its press release, ICE appeared to reveal for the first time that investigators learned that Campos-Hurtado was in the country illegally after Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) investigators “recovered electronic devices containing child sexual abuse material and numerous counterfeit immigration and identification documents.”
Campos-Hurtado unintentionally left his phone at a Franklin business in 2023, leading a member of the public called the Franklin Police Department after discovering child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on the device. Several additional victims stepped forward after the 2023 arrest.
Though his conviction was for crimes committed between 2017 and 2021, ICE said in its press release that local police, the U.S. Marshals Service, and HSI Nashville determined he had allegedly been producing CSAM since at least January 2013.
U.S. Attorney Braden Boucek recently announced the 30-year sentence given to Campos-Hurtado last month, and ICE on Friday confirmed, “he will be removed to Mexico through immigration proceedings” after the sentence is complete.
“Homeland Security Investigations is committed to protecting children and ensuring that predators face the full force of the law,” HSI Nashville Special Agent in Charge Dennis M. Fetting stated. “Together with our partners, we will relentlessly identify, apprehend and remove dangerous offenders from our communities.”
A report released by the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference in January recorded a total of 11,344 instances of illegal aliens being charged or convicted of a crime last year, when one joint operation between ICE and Tennessee Highway Patrol resulted in the arrests of nearly 200 illegal aliens.
Earlier this year, ICE said that 117 illegal aliens were arrested during a week-long operation in East Tennessee.
ICE recently confirmed plans to open a call center in Nashville.
