President Donald Trump Applauds Tennessee School Choice Bill

President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump weighed in on the Education Freedom Act of 2025 filed in the Tennessee General Assembly on Tuesday, voicing support for the legislators who are working to pass the school choice bill.

“Congratulations to Tennessee Legislators who are working hard to pass School Choice this week, which I totally support,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Tuesday afternoon.

Sponsored in the General Assembly by House Majority Leader William Lamberth (R-Portland) and Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson (R-Franklin), the Education Freedom Act would make 20,000 Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) worth $7,075 available for Tennessee students in the 2025-2026 school year.

In addition to creating school choice vouchers, the bill, in its current form, would also provide K-12 public school teachers with a $2,000 bonus in the 2025-2026 school year and dedicate 80 percent of all sports wagering dollars to build and maintain public school facilities.

Trump, who has previously described school choice as “the civil rights issue of our time,” added in his Tuesday post, “We will very soon be sending Education BACK TO THE STATES, where it belongs.”

“It is our goal to bring Education in the United States to the highest level, one that it has never attained before. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump said.

The creation of a universal school choice program in every U.S. State is included in the 2024 Republican Party Platform.

Tennessee state legislators convened Monday for a special legislative session to focus on passing the school choice bill as well as a disaster relief package and other measures related to immigration.

U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) joined Trump in advocating for the passage of the Education Freedom Act, writing in an X post Tuesday, “Stand with me and [President Trump], and support school choice.”

“Tennessee parents know what is best for their child, not government bureaucrats. Every parent should be able to choose where their child attends school – regardless of economic status. It’s time we make school choice a reality in Tennessee,” Blackburn added in a previous post.

  1. Joe Blow

Trump needs to keep his nose out of local school business. Lamberth is just being the governor’s front man. He and I often agree but we do it with respect. This bill is a killer. How much more money is it going to cost the taxpayers to support two parallel school systems while causing the private sector to adopt failed state public education policies to get the money? There are NO private schools in a majority of Tennessee counties. The whole thing stinks to high heaven.

  2. America First

Trump will Abolish the Federal Department of Education, so all our tax dollars will be returned to Tennessee & should give our School Choice Plan the resources to make the Tennessee Efucation Program the model for the nation.
