The Senate on Friday rejected the House’s stopgap spending bill to avert a government shutdown in 11 days.
The bill was defeated in a 44-48 vote, with Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman voting for the Republican bill, and GOP Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska voting against it, The Hill news outlet reported.
The continuing resolution would have funded the government until Nov. 21.
New York Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Minority Leader, claimed the Republican bill kept”the same lousy status quo.” He called it the “Trump Healthcare Shutdown.” According to Schumer, the Democrat bill proposal protects people’s healthcare and keeps the “government functioning.”
“Americans are TIRED of the status quo. They are TIRED of Donald Trump’s chaos and inflationary policies. And by not even sitting down with us: Donald Trump and Republicans are shutting the government down,” he stated.
If Congress fails to pass a stopgap spending bill, it will shut down on Sept. 30th. The last time the government shut down was from December 22, 2018 to January 25, 2019, which was 35 days, CNN reported.
