A group of Knoxville activists who oppose federal immigration enforcement claimed on Thursday that a man recently detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), after allegedly driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or drugs, is actually member of the activist group who has illegally lived in the United States for two decades.

Allies of Knoxville’s Immigrant Neighbors (AKIN) claimed in a press release posted to Instagram that Alejandro Guizar Lozano, 32, who ICE reportedly stated was detained following his sentence of 11 months and 29 days for a DUI conviction, is actually a member of the activist group who was well known to its organizers.

Kilmar Abrego Garcia

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) on Wednesday asked District Court Judge Waverly Crenshaw, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, to maintain his court’s seal on a September letter from Acting U.S. Attorney Robert E. McGuire to the criminal defense attorneys representing Kilmar Abrego Garcia, as prosecutors said it holds information about cooperating witnesses whose identities are protected.

McGuire’s submission to the court on Thursday said the DOJ would not object to the release of the body-worn camera video from the November 30, 2022 traffic stop stop of Abrego Garcia by Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), nor would it object to the unsealing of a March report by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) about Abrego Garcia, but did assert that the September letter should remain sealed.

Commentary: The U.S. Can Break Free From China’s Control of Rare Earth Minerals

Coal Mining

President Donald Trump has recently signaled his intent to impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods due to Beijing’s sweeping restrictions on rare earth minerals. This escalation highlights that the trade conflict between these two nations is far from settled.

At the heart of the current dispute are rare earth minerals—a crucial group of 17 elements vital to our digital economy and national security. They are indispensable in everything from electric vehicles to smartphones to fighter jets and missiles. The Chinese Communist Party has aggressively pursued dominance in this market, using substantial financial subsidies and often neglecting the significant environmental impacts associated with mining and processing. Consequently, China now commands nearly 70% of global rare earth production and processes around 90% of the world’s rare earth elements.
