Alleged Sex Trafficker Arrested in Nashville Area Now Detained by ICE

Angel Diaz-Carvajal,

Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) on Wednesday announced the arrest of Angel Javier Diaz-Carvajal for running a sex trafficking operation in Antioch, Tennessee, who allegedly made online advertisements for prostitution, and was busted by undercover officers with the department’s Specialized Investigations Division.

Despite initially being allowed to secure pretrial release with a $185,000 bond, records made public by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office confirm that Diaz-Carvajal is not eligible for release due to a detainer requested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to ICE, its detainers are requests for local law enforcement to hold an illegal immigrant for up to 48 hours, pending their transfer to the federal agency.

According to MNPD, Diaz-Carvajal (pictured above) was contacted by an undercover detective through a phone number placed in an online advertisement. He ultimately agreed to meet the detective, alongside a sex trafficking victim, at an Antioch motel.

The department stated that Diaz-Carvajal initially fled from officers on foot, but was “quickly” arrested, and has been charged with trafficking for a commercial sex act, promoting prostitution, and evading and resisting arrest.

According to MNPD, the woman accompanying Diaz-Carvajal was arrested as she approached the detective’s vehicle.

She reportedly told the department she was afraid of Diaz-Carvajal, who allegedly promised she would be employed as a maid in Nashville, “but instead forced her into prostitution.” MNPD stated that the woman also claimed she had not eaten in a day, and is now receiving victim services.

It has additionally been reported that Diaz-Carvajal was introduced to the woman through his wife, and that he was withholding her payments for prostitution for more than a day at the time of his arrest.

The arrest follows the January police bust of an alleged brothel that federal authorities have claimed was operated by members of the Venezuelan prison gang, Tren de Aragua, including eight who have been charged with human trafficking by the U.S. Department of Justice.

More recently, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Tuesday confirmed that an immigration enforcement operation in Nashville led to the arrest of a convicted child sex offender, as well as another member of Tren de Aragua.
