Montgomery County Commissioner Jason Knight Launches Bid for TN-07 U.S. House Seat

Montgomery County Commissioner and former Clarksville City Councilman Jason Knight launched a bid for Congress on Wednesday to represent Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District.

Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District is currently represented by incumbent U.S. Representative Mark Green (R-TN-07), who, on Monday, announced he will retire from Congress and take a position in the private sector after the U.S. House of Representatives passes the budget reconciliation package.

Knight, an Afghanistan-Iraq combat veteran who deployed on three tours with the 101st Airborne Division and continues to serve as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve, said he is running to succeed Green in representing Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District because President Donald Trump “needs reinforcements he can count on in Congress.”

“From lawless rioters in California to obstructionists in Congress to far-left Governors like Gavin Newsom, it is clear that an extreme out-of-touch minority is trying to stop President Trump and the America First policies that he is fighting for,” Knight said.

“I am a staunch constitutionalist and a proven conservative who will fight tooth and nail to support and deliver President Trump’s agenda,” he added.

If elected to Congress, Knight said he would support Trump’s deportation efforts and fight for increased border security; support law enforcement and veterans; advance trade policies that put America first; work to keep men out of women’s sports and spaces; and keep politics out of classrooms.

“Throughout my entire career, I have consistently proven myself to be a principled conservative and a problem solver who delivers. In Congress, I will listen, lead, and deliver conservative results that make America and Tennessee safer, stronger, and more prosperous,” Knight said.

Knight’s announcement came one day after Tennessee Department of General Services Commissioner Matt Van Epps also announced he will seek Green’s congressional seat.

Other potential candidates who may seek Green’s seat include State Representative Jody Barrett (R-Dickson), former State Representative Brandon Ogles, and State Senators Bill Powers (R-Clarksville) and Kerry Roberts (R-Springfield).

Last year, when Green initially announced his retirement from Congress before reconsidering his decision, four possible Republican candidates—Dr. Omar Hamada, Robby Starbuck, Jeff Beierlein, and State Senator Roberts—all expressed an interest in representing the 7th Congressional District at the time to The Tennessee Star.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has yet to call a special election to fill Green’s U.S. House seat.
