Tennessee Bail Companies Sued After Incorrect Ankle Monitor Usage Allegedly Preceded Murder of 22-Year-Old Woman

Bricen Rivers

Multiple companies within Tennessee’s bail bond industry are being sued by the estate of Lauren Johansen, the 22-year-old who was allegedly murdered last year by her ex-boyfriend, Bricen Rivers, who was released from Davidson County Jail last year following a judge’s decision to reduce his bond, and then was allegedly fitted with an improperly programmed ankle monitor from a company that was never authorized to work with Rivers.

Representing Lauren Johansen’s estate, her father, Robert Johansen, filed the lawsuit last week in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, naming three bail bonding companies, their owners, and two insurance companies as defendants.

Florida Officials Ask Supreme Court to Allow the State to Enforce Strict New Immigration Law

CBS News   Florida officials asked the Supreme Court on Monday to allow the state to enforce a new immigration law that makes it a crime for people in the United States unlawfully to enter Florida.  In an emergency appeal to the high court, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier asked the justices to put on hold a federal judge’s decision preventing law enforcement officers from enforcing the new law, known as SB 4-C. Mike Johnson Opposes Bipartisan War Powers Resolution to Authorize Trump’s Iran Strikes

The Hill   Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Monday came out against a bipartisan war powers resolution to prevent U.S. intervention in Iran, a show of support for President Trump as dozens of lawmakers question the weekend strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), a libertarian and progressive pair, introduced a war powers resolution last week that would direct Trump to “terminate the use” of U.S. armed forces from Iran unless Congress authorizes such involvement. Massie said Monday the effort has 57 cosponsors, and he vowed to bring a vote on the legislation.   Asked Monday if he would allow the bipartisan measure to come to the floor for a vote, Johnson demurred, suggesting it was a political endeavor, and noted presidents in both parties had authorized military strikes without congressional approval. Kilmar Abrego Garcia May Be Deported Again If Released from DOJ to ICE Custody, Prosecutor Warns

Kilmar Abrego Garcia

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) informed U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee in a Sunday filing that the decision by Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes to deny a detention hearing for Kilmar Abrego Garcia will likely result in his deportation from the United States, as the alleged illegal immigrant smuggler is currently subject to a detainer by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Without the stay, Abrego Garcia will likely be transferred to ICE custody following a Wednesday hearing by Holmes.

Acting U.S. Attorney Robert E. McGuire argued in the four-page submission that Holmes failed to consider the gravity of the evidence presented during Abrego Garcia’s arraignment, when investigators testified that the Salvadoran man’s co-conspirators said he involved minors in his trip, and that one minor was being smuggled during the November 2022 traffic stop.
