Aaron Gulbransen, founder and executive director of the Tennessee Conservatives Coalition, said Tennessee Republican Party Executive Committee Member Oscar Brock should resign or be removed from his post after publicly declaring he would not support any member of Congress seeking reelection.
Last month, Brock said he would be ceasing all support for Republican incumbents in Tennessee over the federal government shutdown.
Brock made the statement in an October post to social media, writing, “I’m not going to support ANY member of Congress who runs for reelection this year.”
On Thursday, Brock told The Star that Republicans were wrong to accuse Democrats of keeping the government closed because they want to secure funding to provide free healthcare to illegal immigrants.
Gulbransen said Brock’s statement directly violates his duties as both a member of the Tennessee Republican Party’s Executive Committee and the Republican National Committee, whose core responsibility is to support and elect Republican candidates.
“Is that his official resignation letter? Because the job of the National Committeeman of the Tennessee Republican Party – any Republican party, insert state name here – is to support Republican nominees and he’s saying he is not going to support any of the congressmen,” Gulbransen said on Thursday’s edition of The Michael Patrick Leahy Show.
Gulbransen went on to emphasize that the primary responsibility of any party official – especially a national committeeman – is to support and elect Republican candidates and, by refusing to support any incumbents, Brock is effectively declaring that he will not perform the very function of his office.
“The only job of anybody with a title in the Republican party is to support and elect Republicans. That’s your job. It is not to try to exercise influence on what you think Donald Trump should be doing with the shutdown,” he said.
Gulbransen maintained that Brock’s statement amounts to an implicit resignation, since he has publicly renounced the core task assigned to him.
“Oscar Brock has just publicly announced he is not going to do his job as National Committeeman, at the least. He is providing aid and comfort to Democrats who are going to be challenging all of these Republican congressmen,” Gulbransen said.
Gulbransen further stressed that this is not the first time Brock has opposed the party’s direction, noting that he previously undermined the Trump-aligned wing by removing duly elected Trump delegates from the Republican National Convention.
“This is not the first time that Oscar Brock has opposed, at least, the president’s agenda. He opposed the president’s platform last time and removed duly elected Republican delegates that were Trump delegates to the Republican National Convention,” he said.
Considering this and the seriousness of his latest comments, Gulbransen called for Brock’s resignation or his removal by the state party’s executive committee.
“He absolutely needs to resign,” Gulbransen said.
