The Republican-led Ohio Redistricting Commission on Friday adopted a new congressional map to assist the GOP in the 2026 midterm elections.
The redrawn congressional districts will help Republicans gain two seats in the U.S. House next year, The Associated Press reported. The GOP currently has 10 of the 15 Ohio congressional seats.
The state constitution required redistricting because the current districts were adopted without bipartisan support after the 2020 U.S. Census. The redistricting comes as President Trump has urged Republican-led states to redraw their congressional maps to help the GOP win more seats.
GOP-led states that have already redrawn their congressional districts are Texas, Missouri and North Carolina.
Democrats are attempting to counteract Republicans’ redistricting, with California voters going to the polls on Tuesday to decide on redrawing congressional maps. Virginia state lawmakers passed a constitutional amendment to redraw the state’s congressional map.
Governor Glenn Youngkin came out against the plan last week.
“Two-thirds of Virginians spoke loud and clear when they codified nonpartisan redistricting into our state Constitution five years ago. 12 days before our statewide elections, this is a shameless, reprehensible political power grab by Democrat lawmakers desperate for anything to distract from the disastrous Democrat Shutdown and Jay Jones’ demented comments and criminal investigation,” he stated.
Also, this week, Governor Mike Braun called a special session in Indiana to redistrict the state’s congressional maps.
Currently, Democrats are just three seats shy of winning control of the House in next year’s election.
