Doctor and patient

Tennessee is on the verge of a meaningful step forward for patients, families, and the future of healthcare in our state. With overwhelming bipartisan support—passing the House 94-0 and the Senate 29-1—HB 484 / SB 435 reflects a powerful shared commitment to improving patient access to modern, evidence-based care.

As someone deeply committed to helping families, businesses, legislators, and medical providers navigate the complexities of healthcare, I understand how critical timely and accurate medical information can be. Biomarker testing represents an important advancement in medicine, helping guide more personalized treatment decisions and allowing patients to access the right care at the right time. For many facing serious or chronic illnesses, this can make a life-changing difference.

HB 484 would require TennCare and state-regulated health plans to provide coverage for biomarker testing when medically necessary and supported by recognized clinical guidelines or FDA-approved indications. This is an important and practical step that helps ensure patients are not denied access to innovative diagnostic tools simply because of outdated coverage policies.

For too many Tennesseans, navigating healthcare can already feel overwhelming. Insurance barriers should not prevent patients from benefiting from medical advancements that can improve diagnosis, treatment planning, and long-term outcomes. By addressing these barriers, Tennessee lawmakers have demonstrated thoughtful leadership and a strong commitment to patient-centered policy.

This legislation also ensures Tennessee remains competitive with a growing number of states that have already adopted similar measures. More than 20 states have recognized the importance of expanding access to biomarker testing, and Tennessee now has the opportunity to join them rather than fall behind.

The bipartisan momentum behind HB 484 deserves recognition and gratitude. It reflects what is possible when policymakers prioritize patients and work collaboratively to strengthen healthcare access.

Now, as this important bill awaits Governor Lee’s signature, Tennessee has an opportunity to reinforce its commitment to innovation, accessibility, and better patient outcomes. Signing HB 484 into law would send a clear message that Tennessee values modern healthcare solutions and is prepared to support patients and families with the tools they need to make informed healthcare decisions.
